Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is approaching this upcoming Monday, giving some of us an extra day to snooze a bit longer or to be productive and cross some things off our to-do lists. There’s also a third option – celebrate MLK Day by engaging in the activities that the University of Michigan hosts in order to honor this holiday.

The annual MLK Day symposium will be celebrated by the University of Michigan with several events being hosted across many locations.

In Ann Arbor, Hill Harper, an award-winning actor, best-selling author, and philanthropist, will be delivering the keynote lecture for the 32nd annual MLK Symposium. Harper is the founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation,  which is dedicated to providing a path of empowerment and education to underserved youth, and he is also the author of four New York Times bestsellers, and receiver of seven NAACP Image Awards.  He travels frequently in order to deliver speeches with powerful messages for audiences ranging from youth to adults to business leaders.

If you are not able to be in Ann Arbor on Monday, and don’t want to miss Hill Harper’s lecture, then you can still live stream the event from any location, or you can attend an event in which the livestream will be broadcasted. The University of Michigan Detroit Center will be hosting their annual MLK Day symposium by showing a live simulcast of Hill Harper’s keynote lecture, followed by a luncheon and a panel discussion. The Detroit Center is offering the opportunity to celebrate MLK day by actively engaging with the community and discussing relevant political topics.

More events occurring on MLK Day include “The Fierce Urgency of Now – What is Y(our) Story?” and “MLK Diag Wall.” Both these events are two of many occurring on the Ann Arbor campus. “The Fierce Urgency of Now – What is Y(our) Story?” is an opportunity to share stories through written or spoken word, performance pieces, poems, art, music, or song.  Meanwhile, “MLK Diag Wall,” is hosted on the Diag, and presents an opportunity to express your thoughts about the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by writing on one of the Diag boards provided, while enjoying free refreshments.
